SMA stands for Society of Makeup Artists.
Historically, actors / actresses used to do make-up, and some still do today in theaters. However, because film and television are so united, only professional make-up artists can apply make-up in the sacred halls of these two media companies. Actors are rarely allowed to wear make-up or make-up. Professional makeup artists can become members of the IATSE Society of Makeup Artists (SMA) and / or makeup artists and hair stylists.
