Metallurgical process in which the surface of alloy steels is hardened by heating them in the presence of ammonia (a compound of nitrogen and hydrogen). Nitrogen released by the decomposition of ammonia reacts with the metal to make iron nitride, an hardening substance.
The process of heating steel in the presence of ammonia or other nitrogenous material so as to increase hardness and corrosion resistance.
