The advice from others here is good, but the language can be misleading. When they refer to a blown inner cap, I mean a used (as opposed to unused) lock section cap. So I spent some time without success finding a way to use the brass exterior for indoor use. A call to the Kwickset Information Line put me on the right track. The removable cover is intended for indoor use but refers to a small circular disc with two Phillips heads removed, not a large brass exterior that fits into the door. If you look closely at the outer edge of this small disk, you will see some very narrow indentations. Use a thin (or pointed) screwdriver to remove this thin panel and you will see a large inner part that can be removed with a regular screwdriver.

I had to do all this because it was difficult to lock and unlock. Graphite T on the internal sliding mechanism solves this problem and eliminates the need to purchase an alternative padlock. You can't get graphite on this part of the lock without separating it like this.
