I was shocked when I saw it during the movie.
Gotham is the nickname of New York which is the basis of the spoken version of Gotham City Comics. And I just learned that in March, Queens City Council tried to put pressure on New York to adopt Gotham City as its official nickname, the Dark Kite was released (apparently not Apple but the official nickname). In newer movies, Gotham City is actually an updated Chicago, but not all hints / references specify the exact location (such as The Simpsons to Springfield).

Author Fl Finger mentions the name of the city and why Batman moved from New York to the legendary city: in fact, it was to be called Gotham City Civic City. So I tried Capital City, then Coast City. So I flipped through a New York City book called Gotham Jewelers, and said, "That's right, Gotham City." We don't call it New York because we want everyone in every city to recognize it.
