If4 Hybridization
What is the hybridization of the central atom in IF4? 3
More information on hybridization s, p, d, f.
sp3d2 The central iodine atom is surrounded by six electron densities, four fluorine atoms and two lone pairs of electrons. The ion has a total of 7 (for iodine) + 7 * 4 (for fluorine) + 1 (for charge 1) = 36 valence electrons. Fluorine never binds more than once, so all four atoms of fluorine must bind to iodine, which leaves it in an expanded valence state. If you draw the Lewis structure of the ion, you will see that there are only 32 electrons around the fluorine. The other four iodines should have two separate pairs.
The state of sp3 hybridization makes sense for IF4, where there are 4 paths because it has four bonds. Consider also the burden. I don't remember you circling the project or adding loads in the normal hybridized state.
I think it's sp3 because it has 4 links ...
