No, you can't just sign up, but the process is fast. At the online school where I enrolled my daughter, I had to apply, return all the paperwork and wait. We did all this two weeks before school and two days after being accepted.
Remember that K12 is a curriculum, not a school. You can have several different scales to use with K12. Their mothers have performed well, some are more supportive than others.
