Featured Snippets
They provide users with a quick answer to their query. Featured snippets are more likely to appear when users enter an informational search query. Google displays them above regular search results, displaying relevant selections from the site as a list, table, or text, with an image or video attached. Since the featured snippet box is more prominent than organic search results, recommended websites can expect higher click-through rates (CTRs) and traffic. Read on to learn more about featured snippets and how to optimize websites to make them more likely to appear.
What do the featured clips look like?
Google shows featured snippets for various searches on the first page of search results. The ranking of these snippets is often referred to as position 0. The snippets contain relevant website content that matches the user's query. The featured snippet consists of a set of landing page content, which is categorized in the snippet as follows:
- Extract text FROM
- excerpt from the list
- table extract
- excerpt from the video
Featured snippets usually also include an image, although the image is usually not from the same source site as the featured content. Sometimes the featured snippet can even display video content. Google also displays the website title and URL in the snippet, giving users more information about the original domain. What is not shown is the meta description. Since the snippet is placed above the organic search results, at position 0, the associated URL of this website can expect more organic traffic.

The featured snippet is often confused with the direct response, also known as an answer box. The difference here is that the answer field is a very simple answer to a keyword and does not contain a link to an external website. The response in the answer box is generated based on data from Google, often obtained from the knowledge network.
How often are featured snippets?
According to the monthly Searchmetrics SERP Features Monitor analysis, a significant number of Google search results contain featured snippets. The following dates are from February 2020.
US: 9.7% of searches in the US show a featured snippet in the search results. UK: Featured snippet appears in search results for 8.4% of searches. Germany: 6.5% of searches show a featured snippet in Google.de search results.
Why optimize featured snippets?
First of all, it improves the findability of your website in relevant Google search results. Position 0 means that the only other results showing above position 0 are paid ads and the rest of the organic search results go down. Many complain that users get answers to their questions in a fragment and thus have no reason to visit the site. While this may be the case for very simple searches, for more complex information, Google will only display a text snippet, a list, or a table in a snippet, requiring users to click a link and go to a page. † Information. Where to start?
If you're considering optimizing featured snippets, ask yourself a few questions:
- How effective are they in my industry? The frequency of featured snippets varies widely from industry to industry. According to a study by Searchmetrics, recommended search results are most common in the health sector, where they appear in 14.4% of health-related keywords analysed. Featured snippets are much less used for e-commerce, travel and media in these industries, showing position 0 in less than 3% of Google searches.
- When do featured snippets appear? To know when to show featured snippets and for which searches, you first need to analyze your own set of keywords. Your best bet is to use the Searchmetrics suite. If you find featured snippets for a large percentage of your keywords, then it makes sense to select them as SEO keywords and increase your chances of ranking 0. Remember to analyze your competitors' snippets and their respective URLs so you can get better text. † or a list of high-quality content clips.
How to optimize featured snippets?
- First of all, it's important to make full use of the target keyword or keyword phrase on the website you want Google to reference in the snippet.
- It also makes sense to display the keyphrase as a question in the title tag, ideally in an H2 tag relatively high on the page.
- For a piece of text, it is important to write one or two sentences, optimized with a simple sentence structure, in response to the question of the title tag.
- To simplify the list snippet, use the question tag as the title tag with more trigger words, then add the list items below. Google only shows a few bookmarks at most, so users who want to see more can go to your page, increasing your CTR.
- To create content for a table snippet, re-insert the key phrase as a title tag and create a simple table with more rows for your content. When you optimize your content in this way, Google doesn't display the entire table in the featured snippet.
- Once you've optimized your page content, you can use Google Search Console tools or our Searchmetrics suite to see how well you optimized your list snippet, table snippet, or text snippet. Use Search Console to evaluate every position in the rankings, including position 0, so you can see different CTRs, clicks and other stats for each position.
For some searches, Google displays an answer summary called featured snippets above the terms in normal search results. The snippet field is often used for question-based searches and contains a short answer to a question with a link to the website that provided the answer.
Often referred to as position zero on a search engine results page, snippets are often sought after by SEOs because they represent a stamp of authority. If Google determines that your answer to a search should be displayed as a snippet, it means that Google considers your answer to be the best on the web. This may not always be the case, but position zero is still a good thing for your site to earn.
