Edwin Starr sang in the first season. For part of the series, Weber's version of Sheryl Crow was used. Crow recently recorded a version of the song and users decided to use the version for initial credits.

I don't think the network changed to the Edwin version, at least not when I was at CBS. What an incredible moment!

This is not Sheryl. She was a singer named Christi Baeuerle. I know because my husband is SW and he and his band mates are our friends. The network only used its version for one season, only to return to the Edwin Star version due to viewer complaints. Although difficult, the version is great.
