Dark Data
Gartner defines hidden data as information assets that are collected, processed, and stored by organizations in the course of their normal activities, but are not typically used for other purposes (such as analytics, business relationships, and direct revenue generation). Like dark matter in physics, dark data often shapes the universe of information assets in most organizations. As a result, companies often keep data confidential only for compliance purposes. Storing and backing up data often takes more effort (and sometimes more risk) than it's worth.
