Bimodal

Bimodality is the practice of managing two different but related work styles: one focused on predictability and the other focused on exploration. Mode 1 is optimized for more predictable and understandable areas. The focus is on using what is already known and bringing the legacy environment to a state suitable for the digital world. Mode 2 is exploratory, experiments to solve new problems and is optimized for dark areas. These initiatives often start with a hypothesis that is tested and refined in a short iterative process, perhaps using a minimum viable product (MVP) approach. Both modes are necessary to create significant value and drive significant organizational change, and neither is static. Combining more predictable technological and product evolution (Mode 1) with new and innovative processes (Mode 2) is the essence of a bimodal business. Both play a fundamental role in digital transformation.
