Definition of Benzene (C6H6):
A colourless volatile liquid hydrocarbon present in coal tar and petroleum, and used in chemical synthesis. Its use as a solvent has been reduced because of its carcinogenic properties.
Highly flammable aromatic hydrocarbon used as a versatile solvent and feedstock for hundreds of products such as paints, plastics, and rubber. It is derived from toluene (hydrocarbon derived from petroleum) or fractional distillation of coal tar. A known carcinogen, it is also called benzol or varnish makers and painters (VM&P) naphtha.
