Baud - How To Discuss

Baud

Baud is a unit of signal speed. Baud rate is the number of discrete changes per second of some aspect of the signal (such as the voltage in a wire). Transfer rates are now more often measured in bits per second (bps) than in baud. The two terms were virtually synonymous until modems started to exceed 2400 bps, after which they diverged further as modem speeds increased. Modems now use encryption methods to transmit more than one baud bit, making their actual baud values irrelevant.

Meanings of Baud

  1. The unit of symbol rate is the number of signaling events per second.

  2. Bits per second (bits per second), regardless of the number of bits each character represents.
